GBU-15 Glide Bomb

Guided Bomb Unit 15 is an unpowered, glide weapon used to destroy high-value enemy targets. It was designed for use with F-15E Strike Eagle, F-111 'Aardvark' and F-4 Phantom II aircraft, but the United States Air Force is currently only deploying it from the F-15E. The GBU-15 has long-range maritime anti-ship capability with the B-52 Stratofortress. Rockwell International is the prime contractor for this weapon system. The weapon consists of modular components that are attached to either a general purpose Mark 84 bomb or a penetrating-warhead BLU-109 bomb. Each weapon has five components -- a forward guidance section, warhead adapter section, control module, airfoil components, and a weapon data link. The guidance section is attached to the nose of the weapon and contains either a television guidance system for daytime or an imaging infrared system for night or limited, adverse weather operations. A data link in the tail section sends guidance updates to the control aircraft that enables the weapon systems operator to guide the bomb by remote control to its target. An external electrical conduit extends the length of the warhead which attaches the guidance adapter and control unit. The conduit carries electrical signals between the guidance and control sections. The umbilical receptacle passes guidance and control data between cockpit control systems of the launching aircraft and the weapon prior to launch. Random Killing is a punk rock band from Toronto, Ontario, Canada who were assembled initially as a joke in 1984. Their original name was Roy's Comrades, which was a nod to Roy mcmurtry, Attorney General of Ontario at the time. After writing a few decent songs, the band decided to record and stay together. In 1995, their song "12," from Thoughts of Aggression (Raw Energy 1994), was re-recorded at CBC Studios and released as an animated video by Sesame Park and subsequently picked up by Sesame Street where it aired internationally for almost a decade. General Dynamics F-111 flies past the Adelaide V8 Supercars event in 2010. The RAAF F-111 will be retired later this year, to be replaced by the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, so this is probably the lat time you'll see the spectacular "Dump and Burn" party trick over Adelaide, South Australia. The RAAF is the only other air force besides the USAF to operate the F-111, using a mixture of original "C" models, as well as some "G" models from the USAF. The RAAF is last operator of the type worldwide, which has provided almost three decades of service. Affectionately known as "the pig" (because it roots around in the dirt) the F-111 is officially nicknamed "the Aardvark". Despite a troubled entry into service, the jet has proven a strong performer and will be missed by civilians and military alike. USAF F-111s flew from England to Libya to strike Momar Ghaddaffi's HQ during the 1980's in Operation Eldorado. One F-111 was lost in this operation. This is old footage from 2003 showing my pulsejet powered gokart (documented at aardvark.co.nz with a very tired 55lbs-thrust Lockwood valveless engine and fuel-injected afterburning augmentor -- which made no difference to the power. Note that in this run, the engine spits the sparkplug out and stops -- you can see the wispy flame coming out the plug-hole.

www.zsl.org ZSL London Zoo is getting its first pair of aardvarks for nearly 18 years, when two move into the Zoos soon to open Animal Adventure exhibit. In the next few weeks 18 months old, Misha and one year-old, Kiyo will be able to have a nosey around their new state of the art £2.3 million home. The two friends will be living in the Root Zone, one of the exhibits four specially designed zones which have been designed by children for children. Joining Misha and Kiyo in Animal Adventure will be the Zoos ever extending coati family which consists of mum Rosie, dad Quito and youngsters Jimmy, Bertie, Basil and Brush. They will live in the Tree Zone next door to their cape crested porcupine neighbours Nancy, Polly, Blondie and Lena. Visitors will also get the chance to get up close and personal with llamas Perry and Beegee and a troop of alpacas in the exhibits Touch Zone.
